A few years ago, a number of personal issues came to a head and I had no real choice but to face them and start working through them. As part of that working through them, I began writing poetry again and it has become a very powerful and effective tool for me in rediscovering and reconnecting with myself, which is at the heart of my recovery. In The Poet (delayed), I'll share some of my poetry and discuss it with different guests. But the real point of the podcast is to use my poetry to start conversations about trauma, healing and personal growth.","_fireside":{"subtitle":"using poetry to discover meaning in life","pubdate":"2024-04-25T05:00:00.000-06:00","explicit":false,"copyright":"2024 by Scott R. TERRIBLE POTENTIAL

\n\n

I see it now
\nFor years I only sensed it
\nOr saw the dissipating dust tails of its approach
\nBut it filled me with terror
\nAnd there was no cover or protection
\nSo I ran
\nAs fast as my child stride could take me
\nNot even knowing what it was –
\nOnly that it was coming
\nBut that made the fear so much more
\nIn my little mind
\nSo I ran harder
\nUntil I forgot why I was running –
\nOnly knowing that I couldn’t stop

\n\n

But I see it now
\nIts shape is fluid and undefined
\nAnd its terrible potential fills my mind
\nI want to keep running – retreating
\nBut it won’t stop and
\nIt’s closing the gap and
\nIt’s more terrible than I ever thought
\nBut its real – I see it now
\nAnd I know
\n There’s no escape, there never was.
\nBut I want to keep running anyway
\nUntil it overtakes me
\nI won’t see it coming; it will just happen and be done
\nBut my insufficient legs refuse to carry me anymore
\nSo I prostrate myself as an offering

\n\n

I know you’re coming, I whisper,
\nAnd I offer myself willingly

\n\n

This is not defeat, I reassure myself
\nThen lower my eyes
\nAnd brace for its fury

\n\n

But my mind keeps moving – defiantly
\nIt knows truths that my body forgot
\nAnd reminds me:

\n\n

You were born with claws
\nAnd they’re with you still –

\n\n

And I remember and feel them
\nThey are deep, but I feel them and they are there
\nSo, I raise my body from the dirt and
\nMy eyes to the distance
\nIt is closer now – the gap disappearing
\nBut not my fear. My fear is growing
\n(broadcast loudly by my beating heart)
\nBut I no longer want to run
\nNor offer myself willingly
\nInstead, I watch it come and I wait – in fear, true
\nBut I wait to receive it
\nAnd I steady myself.

\n\n

I have claws and I feel them
\nAnd I will meet it face to face
\nI have terrible potential too
\nI feel it now.

THEY WERE BEACONS ONCE

\n\n

They are out there.
\nYou know them by their void,
\nTheir masks of nothingness.
\nBut they are something and voracious –
\nConsuming, in large amounts,
\nEverything
\nCompletely
\nTheir prey rage in vain
\nThen submit in silence;
\nNo distress signals sent –
\nEven sound is consumed (and light)
\nIn their dark bellies.
\nBut they were beacons once
\nAnd they shined.

\n\n

Addiction can be so consuming that it turns shining people into metaphorical black holes. It has the power, with drugs and alcohol, at least, to destroy people so completely that we eventually "know them by their void,/their masks of nothingness."

\n\n

Thoreau wrote: “There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” This profound statement has its application in the struggle with addiction. In order to effectively take one’s life back, it is important to understand what addiction is and what it’s primary causes are so that we can strike at its root rather than just hacking at its branches.

\n\n

Hungarian-Canadian physician, Gabor Maté defined addiction as follows:

\n\n

"Any behavior that a person finds relief in and therefore craves in the short-term, but suffers negative consequences in the long-term and doesn't give up despite the negative consequences."

\n\n

Importantly, Dr. Maté also explains that addiction is not a moral failure or an indication of weakness. “Addiction is not the primary problem. It’s an attempt to solve a problem.”

Dark Canopy

\n\n

Hopelessness covers me:
\nLike a forest canopy
\nOn a moonless night
\n It covers me.
\nI see no way or path
\nTo deliver myself.
\nAnd the darkness:
\nIt fills my eyes.
\nAnd they are unable to see
\nThe torchlight
\nOf rescuers who may approach.
\nAll is black and dead.
\nEvery gleam is only a phantom.
\nAnd the only variations in light
\nAre darker shadows
\nWaiting to finish me off

TERRIBLE POTENTIAL

\n\n

I see it now
\nFor years I only sensed it
\nOr saw the dissipating dust tails of its approach
\nBut it filled me with terror
\nAnd there was no cover or protection
\nSo I ran
\nAs fast as my child stride could take me
\nNot even knowing what it was –
\nOnly that it was coming
\nBut that made the fear so much more
\nIn my little mind
\nSo I ran harder
\nUntil I forgot why I was running –
\nOnly knowing that I couldn’t stop

\n\n

But I see it now
\nIts shape is fluid and undefined
\nAnd its terrible potential fills my mind
\nI want to keep running – retreating
\nBut it won’t stop and
\nIt’s closing the gap and
\nIt’s more terrible than I ever thought
\nBut its real – I see it now
\nAnd I know
\n There’s no escape, there never was.
\nBut I want to keep running anyway
\nUntil it overtakes me
\nI won’t see it coming; it will just happen and be done
\nBut my insufficient legs refuse to carry me anymore
\nSo I prostrate myself as an offering

\n\n

I know you’re coming, I whisper,
\n And I offer myself willingly

\n\n

This is not defeat, I reassure myself
\nThen lower my eyes
\nAnd brace for its fury

\n\n

But my mind keeps moving – defiantly
\nIt knows truths that my body forgot
\nAnd reminds me:

\n\n

You were born with claws
\n And they’re with you still –

\n\n

And I remember and feel them
\nThey are deep, but I feel them and they are there
\nSo, I raise my body from the dirt and
\nMy eyes to the distance
\nIt is closer now – the gap disappearing
\nBut not my fear. My fear is growing
\n(broadcast loudly by my beating heart)
\nBut I no longer want to run
\nNor offer myself willingly
\nInstead, I watch it come and I wait – in fear, true
\nBut I wait to receive it
\nAnd I steady myself.

\n\n

I have claws and I feel them
\nAnd I will meet it face to face
\nI have terrible potential too
\nI feel it now.

Inconsequential

\n\n

At what point is my absence
\nInconsequential?

\n\n

When they’re too young to know the need?
\n(But that time is gone)

\n\n

Certainly not now
\nIn the midst of life’s straits
\nWith foamy waves pounding
\nAnd hidden reefs lurking
\nBeneath an angry, fluid surface.
\nNo; Not now.
\nNow they need a captain
\n(is that presumptuous?)
\nWho has already navigated a similar course –
\nthough more Hazelwood than Magellan.
\n(well, all Hazelwood and no Magellan)

\n\n

Perhaps that time will be
\nWhen they’ve helmed their own ship.
\nIs my absence inconsequential then?
\nCan I cross the bar then?
\nOf course they’ll think of me and perhaps
\nWant to see my face and
\nHear my voice
\n(or have me hear their voice and see their face)
\nBut would my absence harm them?
\nin those later years?
\nThat is the question.

\n\n

But here’s the better question:
\nWould my absence now
\nbe better than running them aground,
\nagain and again
\nand taking on salty water to no seeming end?

\n\n

I’ve given it a go.
\nBut the ship lists endlessly and
\nThe course seems fucked.

\n\n

Would the idea of me
\nBe better than the reality?
\nThat is the real question.

\n\n
\n\n

No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

YOUR FATHER’S SON

\n\n

Your soul was large
\nIt needed to consume newness
\n again and again
\nBut the Chicago frontier
\nHemmed you in
\nYou couldn't expand.
\nSo you crossed the cold,
\n Impersonal Atlantic
\nTo the hot,
\n Exploding Italian front
\nWhere death nearly took you.
\nIt was simple, you said
\nYou looked at it and knew
\nBut you consumed it and moved
\nGaining immunity, it seemed
\nFor death couldn't take you
\nOn its own- though it tried
\n again and again
\nBut it couldn't take you –
\n until Ketchum
\nWhere your father's shadow waited.

\n\n

\n\n

On Pain

\n\n

And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain.

\n\n

And he said:
\nYour pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses
\nyour understanding.

\n\n

Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its
\nheart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain.

\n\n

And could you keep your heart in wonder at the
\ndaily miracles of your life, your pain would not seem
\nless wondrous than your joy;

\n\n

And you would accept the seasons of your heart,
\neven as you have always accepted the seasons that
\npass over your fields.

\n\n

And you would watch with serenity through the
\nwinters of your grief.

\n\n

Much of your pain is self-chosen.

\n\n

It is the bitter potion by which the physician within
\nyou heals your sick self.

\n\n

Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy
\nin silence and tranquillity:

\n\n

For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by
\nthe tender hand of the Unseen,

\n\n

And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has
\nbeen fashioned of the clay which the Potter has
\nmoistened with His own sacred tears.

UNCONDITIONAL

\n\n

Thrust into mortality
\nNew and unbroken yet
\nAnd you,
\n Having just crossed the valley,
\nWith tender reach
\nPull me close to your body
\nWhich was broken for me.
\nIn your safety,
\nYour heartbeat communicates to me
\nOf love
\nOf possession –
\n I belong to you.
\nIn that moment,
\n I alone am your world.
\n I alone am your joy.

\n\n

Poems read by Aunt Kash:

\n\n

Triolet Against Sister, Phyllis McGinley

\n\n

Sisters are always drying their hair.
\nLocked into rooms, alone,
\nThey pose at the mirror, shoulders bare,
\nTrying this way and that their hair,
\nOr fly importunate down the stair
\nTo answer a telephone.
\nSisters are always drying their hair,
\nLocked into rooms, alone.

\n\n

Troilet Against Sisters with notes by Aunt Kash's mom

\n\n

Emily Dickinson poem recited by Aunt Kash's mom:

\n\n

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
\nI shall not live in vain;
\nIf I can ease one life the aching,
\nOr cool one pain,
\nOr help one fainting robin
\nUnto his nest again,
\nI shall not live in vain.

FORGOTTEN WALLS

\n\n

Clarity comes
\nAnd the walls reveal themselves –
\n tall, strong and immovable.
\nIn the haze and fog,
\nWhich is his daily walk,
\nTheir existence is blurred;
\n They are forgotten
\nThough he was there when they were built,
\n and even added stones.
\nNow in clarity, he looks to bring them down –
\n stone by stone.
\nAnd so he works relentlessly,
\n with pick and hammer
\nAs his salty sweat stings his eyes and
\nHis muscles and mind fatigue.
\nYet his only yield from this Sisyphean task is
\nBloodied palms and frustration,
\n While the stones remain, one upon the other.
\nThen slowly and imperceptibly,
\n (under cover of his exhausted heart and mind)
\nThe fog seeps back again
\nAnd hides the stony barricade.

\n\n

The image used as the cover art and on the header is a painting of Sisyphus by Titian.

I've spent most of my life hacking at the branches of my problems and having no sustained improvement as a result. In this first episode I discuss that process and I share and talk about my poem "The Poet's Call."

\n\n

The Poet's Call

\n\n

Write hard words
\nTo break your soul against
\nRedemptive words too
\nTo bind it up again.

\n\n

_Also, I referenced a poem by E. E. Cummings _

\n\n

may I be I is the only prayer--not may I be great or good or beautiful or wise or strong. - Cummings

\n\n

and one by Rainer Maria Rilke.

\n\n

God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
\nthen walks with us silently out of the night.

\n\n

These are the words we dimly hear:

\n\n

You, sent out beyond your recall,
\ngo to the limits of your longing.
\nEmbody me.

\n\n

Flare up like a flame
\nand make big shadows I can move in.

\n\n

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
\nJust keep going. No feeling is final.
\nDon’t let yourself lose me.

\n\n

Nearby is the country they call life.
\nYou will know it by its seriousness.

\n\n

Give me your hand.
